Last week, StatsCan estimated seeded area of flax at 1.115 million acres, 32% less than last year. This was well below the average trade guess of 1.6 million acres. Key reasons for the decline are the boost to lentil and durum acres in regions where flax acres are concentrated. Some observers expect that the final flax acreage estimate will show a smaller decline.
